This research presents a participatory action research (PAR) project aimed at facilitating bottom-up, sustainability planning and development in one of the most socio-economically disadvantageous micro-regions of Eastern Taiwan.
Traditional educational methods are seen as inadequate for the rural areas of Taiwan, and therefore this project targets rural education practiced in communicative spaces around future rural development. The development of an ecological culture is based on Gregory Bateson’s idea about an appropriate form of education for ecological understanding, in which aesthetics and grace are offered to learners through the education process.
Through educational ethnography and action research, this study looks to establish local knowledge, village perspectives, and ecological understanding for rural communities’ education practice.
